The topic of nonbinary people came up at work today. We don’t allow non-gendered titles or options other than M/F. Not out of bigotry but because of expense. To change this would require reprogramming a dozen software products, some of which are outside of our control or run by 3rd party companies. Then you have to do extensive testing to make sure everything still works after the change. So each time the topic comes up we agree things should change, but the company is never going to pay for that unless it has no choice.
It should be the law to offer Mx or a non-binary option, is what I’m saying. Then every company can upgrade their systems by the same deadline. Some might choose to remove gender entirely, win-win.
Update: it’s happening. My company is adding ‘Mx’ to the customer-facing software, and we’re just gonna see what happens when that feeds through to the internal software. Might be that internally it still shows “Mr/Ms” with a manual note to amend any letters that go out, but it’s a start.
I know it’s not the biggest deal, but we have 200,000 individual customers, and all it took was one (1) insistent nonbinary customer and a couple of understanding LGBTQ staff. The next time someone calls, they’ll have a much easier time.
Plus it was a good opportunity to discuss trans & non-binary issues in the office, in a respectful way with some people who hadn’t considered this before.
